The last two allotments were in the area where Brookside Garage is now sited and one was run by the Dawson sisters who were school mistresses and lived on Padiham Road.
When travelling fairs came to Sabden they were held on the waste land which is now the Bowling Green. One Sabden lass ran off with a lad from one of the fairs but it ended happily. They married and lived in Billington for the rest of their lives.
The Bowling Green was opened in 1991 and two years later funds were raised to build the pavilion. Lottery grants in 1999 provided the floodlights.
Gardeners Row was possibly named after the Free Gardeners - a rival to the Oddfellows - a society that provided insurance against sickness and loss of work before the Welfare State.
